The Amber Route and the Vistula-Dunajec

In the 1st–4th centuries CE, a lively amber route ran through the Polish lands — the "Gold of the North" went to the Mediterranean countries. Traces of contacts are numerous finds of Roman coins; in 1897, four denarii were discovered in Gręboszów.
The area of the commune, lying at the junction of the routes along the Vistula and Dunajec rivers, became a place of trade. Leather, honey, wax and herbs were exported to the south; Metal and glass vessels, weapons and ornaments were imported from the empire. The payment equivalent was amber and coins — a topic developed in a separate exhibit about denarii found in Gręboszów.
