The defence of the Vistula section and Józef Piłsudski's headquarters at the rectory in September 1914.
After the outbreak of World War I, the area of the commune became the area of operations of the 1. Infantry Regiment of the Polish Legions, commanded by Józef Piłsudski. The regiment was to defend the section of the Vistula River from the mouth of the Dunajec River to Bolesław.
Piłsudski was quartered in Gręboszów at the rectory of Fr. Piotr Halak. The sub-units were located, m.in, in Hubenice, Kozłów, Samocice, Wola Gręboszowskiej, Biskupice, Lubiczek, Karsy and Borusowa. The fighting lasted from 17 to 25 September 1914; the fallen legionnaires were buried in the parish cemetery in Gręboszów.
