The mortgage register of 1870 — the basis of the rights of large land ownership in Galicia.
Large landed property in Galicia was called tabular property — after the National Table, an Austrian mortgage for noble estates created in 1870. The principle was adopted that rights in rem to landed estates were acquired only through entry in the register.
At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in the commune of Gręboszów, tabular estates were owned by m.in. Count Artur Potocki (1827 ha in a dozen or so villages), Count Jadwiga Kwilecka (1103 ha) and Stanisław Kotarski (692 ha). Apart from extensive farms, however, small peasant farms prevailed — often only 2 morgues of land.
The official *Szematyzm Galicia* for the year 1870 documents the composition of the county administration at the time of creating the register. The entry starostwo in Dąbrowa (p. 26) mentions the starost Piotr Cassina, commissioner Jan Ruczko, adjunct Łyczko and the statistics of the Dąbrowa county: 47,636 inhabitants and 103 settlements. An abbreviated list of starosts — p. 88; on pp. 90–92 the table of contents indicates the further employment of officials (adjuncts, district secretaries).
